No More Rain!
Posted in Crops The Weather , Organic Food by David Wilson
We've had a lot of rain in the last week which was needed, but now we've had enough! So far in July we've had three inches which is quite a lot for this time of year (but not last year which we prefer to forget!). Because of the rain we can't make hay which is annoying as we've still got another 60 acres to make. The vegetables - and especially newly transplanted ones (leeks and winter brassicas) badly needed a drink so the rain has been perfect for them but if it doesn't stop now the grassland and cereals will start to suffer. Hot sunshine is needed, particularly with the cereals and the potatoes because they require it to build carbohydrate. Everyone on the farm is well equipped with light waterproofs, but if it's torrential rain then we wear heavy plastic suits which can get a bit sweaty - but at least they keep off the rain. We have concentrated on jobs in the dry: we've cleaned the grain store which took days and the workshop (where we repair machinery) is tidier than it has been for five years!
