Oink Oink - Piglets Have Arrived!
Posted in Livestock Baby Animals , Organic Food by David Wilson

We've recently seen the arrival of nine piglets which are adorable! They shriek like mad and you just want to pick them up, but they are very fast. The sow has had a couple of litters and nine piglets is about the average number, although we have had 14 piglets in the past. On the farm we have a small herd of rare breed pigs, Tamworth and Large Black. The Prince of Wales is Patron of the Rare Breeds Survival Trust so we tend to stock the most endangered breeds.
The Tamworth pig is definitely the PhD of Pigs; they are incredibly bright and sociable! Both these breeds have a very different proportion of fat to lean compared to the modern pig so the fat is of a much higher quality, but we don't tend to talk about fat quality in this country - we usually refer to fat as revolting. How much we miss!
If you taste meat from these breeds it is a delicious eating experience which is what makes the bacon and ham taste so good!
