Content Milking Cows

Posted in Organic FarmingLivestock by David Wilson

Organic standards mean we stock fewer animals on a given area compared to conventional farming - whether it is in a building in the winter or on a field in the summer. Our cows walk out to their grazing and we don't push them too hard for their milk. Each cow produces on average about 18 and a half litres (four gallons) a day. Ayrshire milk is sweet milk because of its high lactose (milk sugar) content which is why we tend to like it. As far as fat and protein go, it's fairly average. Full fat milk is about 3.6 % fat, Semi-skimmed around 1.5% fat and skimmed is very little! If you look at the amount of milk we drink, the difference between full fat and skimmed milk is tiny and I think not worth worrying about! Every morning, I drink milk from the farm and during the day have lots of mugs of tea to keep me going!

you say that you don t push your herd to hard to produce milk.you allso say that you stock fewer animals.would it be safe to say that the amount of land you have avaiable to you makes this type of farming only sustainable to farms with lots of acre of land
