Off To Mow The Meadow
Posted in Livestock Farming Techniques , Farm Machinery by David Wilson
Although we're not logging yet we are starting to get our two horses, Emperor and Duke, fit enough to mow. We're doing a little bit of mowing with them a few times a week to build their strength up.
Pulling the mower is heavy work, it's the forward motion led by the horses which turns the wheels which then drives the blades. We have a good old-fashioned Finger Bar Mower - it's not called that because it removes farmers' fingers, although you do have to be careful!
We're using the horses to help keep traditional skills alive. We will be mowing the daffodil meadow at Highgrove soon which is something The Prince of Wales really likes us to do.
We might just find more farmers using horse power in the future if oil prices continue to rise!
