Getting Ready For Harvest

Posted in Crops Harvesting Organic Farming Farming TechniquesFarm Machinery by caroline

Looking ahead to sunnier days, we'll start harvesting as soon as the dew is off the crops and the combine has had its daily service, which involves cleaning air filters, checking oil and greasing all the bearings. Then we'll continue harvesting until at least 10 pm, sometimes working into the early hours. We'll start with the rye, followed by the malting barley, the wheat, oats and mustard. Depending on field sizes, we can harvest between 50 and 60 acres a day and if we have a dry period we can harvest all the crops in two and a half to three weeks. But for the moment, we're waiting for some proper sunshine to dry them out and to help them finish the ripening process.
