Oaten Biscuits with Black Pepper

Our Oaten biscuit was the original Duchy Original – it was our first product back in 1992. It’s a bit of a classic and still one of our best sellers.

Like any great idea, it’s also spawned its share of spin-offs and sequels. One of them is the Oaten biscuit with black pepper, which gives a lovely kick to all kinds of savoury things.

Like our other biscuits, it’s made from wheat grown on UK organic farms, usually a traditional variety called Maris Widgeon – which grows unusually tall. As a result, it gives protection to native birds and insects while preventing weeds without the need for pesticides.

The wheat is sent to Shipton Mill, near Home Farm, where it’s stone-ground before being entrusted to our biscuit makers Walkers Shortbread, who’ve been making shortbread in the Scottish Highlands for over 100 years. What they don’t know about biscuits isn’t worth knowing.

Not only do they bake the biscuits, they are the people who helped us create and refine the original Oaten biscuit. That took us 18 months to get the final recipe – which is a lot of biscuit tastings. The result is the thin, crisp texture and a unique flavour balance that all our Oaten biscuits have.

Of course, all of this wouldn’t count for anything if the end product wasn’t worth the effort. Try some with cheese, though, and tell us they’re not delicious!

Organic oats (68%), organic butter, organic wheat flower, organic demeraea sugar, organic cracked black pepper (2%), sea salt*, raising agent (sodium bicarbonate)*.
